The winners of the 2011 Eat Out Awards were announced yesterday and Flat Art Studios has the scoop (and pics of course!) on winning chef, Luke Dale-Roberts. In this week’s post we showcase the work photographer Michael Le Grange has done with him.
Luke Dale Roberts, owner of The Test Kitchen restaurant in Cape Town, clinched the prestigious Chef of The Year Award at The 2011 Eat Out Awards. Flat Art Studios own Michael Le Grange has had the pleasure of working closely with him since Luke’s days as executive chef at La Colombe restaurant situated on Constantia Uitsig. Dedicated and passionate, Luke’s insatiability for culinary invention drove him to open his own restaurant earlier this year. Situated at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, the Test Kitchen is a creative space where Luke and his team endeavor to change our perception of the plate by intriguing and teasing the taste buds.
This year Woolworths Taste Magazine chose to follow Luke’s development at the Test Kitchen in their monthly feature, “Trend”. Michael was asked to be the photographer and so was given the opportunity to photograph Luke and his food each month. This he did willingly and succeeded in keeping the portraits fresh and original demonstrating the different sides of Luke’s enigmatic personality.
Despite what may seem a gritty outer chef exterior, on shoots Luke is easy-going, warm and always friendly. He is a pleasure to work with and the delicious plates of food are something of a plus. Even the more adventurous dishes such as liver liquorice sauce which hardens if left, don’t take up place on the table for too long. He makes food that he enjoys in the hope that it will bring as much joy to others as it does to him. His passion exudes from every part of his being and the only difficulty in photographing Luke in the surprisingly calm serenity of the Test Kitchen’s kitchen is keeping him quiet long enough to get the shot!
As well as photographing Luke for Taste Magazine, Michael also had the privilege once again, of photographing the other nominees for the Eat Out Awards this year. In the results yesterday Luke was top of the chef category, The Greenhouse was voted best Restaurant of the year and The Roundhouse received the Service Excellence Award.
